Description: This research study will compare three approved medications used for the treatment of osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis in individuals with cardiovascular (heart and blood vessel) disease or at high risk for developing cardiovascular disease. The comparison of these medications is investigational. Qualified participants will receive all study-related care and study medication at no charge. Compensation is available for time and travel.
What is expected of me? You will have seven visits to the doctor's office during the first year, and then every 6 months thereafter.
Inclusion Criteria: Men and women, age 18 years and older, with a clinical diagnosis of osteoarthritis (OA) or rheumatoid arthritis (RA) for at least 6 months. - Must have been taking long-term medications to treat their symptoms of OA or RA for at least 6 months.
Must have coronary disease (such as stable angina, heart attack or heart surgery), non-coronary artery disease (such as blockage of an artery, stroke or mini stroke) or diabetes ;
or be at high risk for cardiovascular disease defined by at least 3 of the following: age 55 or older, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, family history of cardiovascular disease or stroke, current smoker, etc.
Exclusion Criteria: Acute joint trauma; planned surgery during the study time period; current treatment with prednisone more than 20mg per day, aspirin more than 325mg per day, coumadin (warfarin), or lithium; heart attack, stroke or major surgery within the last 3 months.
Length of Study: Minimum 18 months, maximum 4 years
