How do laser treatments work?

The laser uses a beam of high-intensity light to penetrate into the skin where it delivers a controlled amount of therapeutic heat.  This therapeutic heat can be used to target unwanted blood vessels, hair follicles, areas of pigment and fine lines and wrinkles.

What can I expect during treatment?

Your laser treatment will take place in the office of Dr. Todd Knapp.  You will first be scheduled for a free, no commitment laser consultation.  During this consultation we will discuss your desired results, your skin type, what the treatment will involve and what your recovery period will be like.  If you decide to proceed with laser treatment we may be able to treat you the same day.   At the time of the treatment/procedure, you will be asked to wear safety eyewear to protect your eyes from the laser light and anyone accompanying you must also wear the protective eyewear during the treatment.  The laser will be guided to the treatment areas with a small handheld probe.  Each laser pulse may be preceded and followed by a short pulse of cooling spray which helps to soothe the skin.  A treatment can take as little as a few minutes to as long as an hour, depending on the area and condition being treated.   Your full treatment may be done on the same day or it may require follow up at a later date depending on what you are having treated and your skin’s reaction.

Does it hurt?

Patients generally experience some slight discomfort with the laser pulse.  This sensation is often described as feeling like a rubber band snapping on the skin and is minimized by the laser’s unique cooling system.

How many treatment sessions will I need?

The number of sessions depends on the treatment you require and the condition of your skin.  For hair removal, most people require at least 4-6 treatments, as the process is only effective when the hair follicle is in its active growth phase.  Other conditions may clear in as few as one treatment. The laser skin care nurse can further discuss a treatment plan for you at your free consultation appointment.

How do I prepare for treatment?

Patients scheduled for all procedures should avoid sun exposure for AT LEAST 2 weeks before and throughout the course of the treatment.  A sun block (SPF 30 or above) should be used.

Patients scheduled for hair removal should avoid electrolysis, hair waxing, chemical hair removers or plucking for four to six weeks prior to treatment.  Also, any hair should be shaved, and your skin should be thoroughly cleaned and dried, removing any makeup, cream, or oils on its surface before laser treatment.

What can I expect after treatment?

Patients should avoid sun exposure before and after treatment, and should apply sun block when going outdoors. Post-treatment care varies depending on what type of treatment was performed.  While results will vary from patient to patient, your skin may appear red.  This can be covered with minimal make-up if necessary.  Typically, treatments are a lunchtime procedure.  Nonetheless, minimal bruising and/or swelling (edema) may occur in some patients.  You will be informed about what to expect from your pretreatment consultation and how long it will take for your skin to return to normal.  If you have any questions or concerns, please be sure to discuss this with Dr. Knapp’s team.

Are these treatments covered by insurance?

Most insurance companies do not offer reimbursement for cosmetic procedures.  Some carriers will, however, cover the treatment of disfiguring birthmarks such as hemangiomas or port wine stains.  Always consult your insurance carrier for conclusive information.
