Oregon Medical Group Celebrates 30 Years of Care and Local Ownership
Today marks 30 years of care for Oregon Medical Group (OMG), which provides primary care and 22 categories of specialty care and services to thousands of patients across Lane County. The group opened their doors in 1988 as five independent clinics combined to form OMG.
At the time of Oregon Medical Group’s debut, there had been a single large provider of medical care, with just a few independent physicians working from small offices.
“We were physicians, not business people, but it had become clear to us, just from feedback provided to us by patients, that there was demand for another option for health care,” according to Gary Brandt, MD, who has been with OMG since its inception. “The idea that we could form a medical practice that could operate more nimbly than we could function within the constraints of a very large organization was compelling. We had confidence that we would be able to provide extremely good care, and that would, over time, allow us to build a robust practice.”
Today, over 700 Oregon Medical Group providers and staff care for patients from all of Lane County at 15 clinics in 10 locations across Eugene and Springfield. “We’re seeing our third generation of patients,” says CEO Karen Weiner, MD. “Patients report feeling safe, taken care of, and that our providers are extremely competent, but also compassionate. That’s exactly what we want to hear.”
Internally, the medical group will celebrate the anniversary for the coming year. “This is a time for us to review where we’ve been, remember why we are here, and re-commit ourselves to the future,” Dr. Weiner says. “It’s a chance to confirm our mission, which is to collaborate to provide the highest quality, patient-centered care.”
